Businesses Partner with Shoppers to Ensure Hunger Free Summer

Help Hollywood Market and other partners raise funds to feed local children summer lunches. Beginning Tuesday, shoppers can add a Hunger Free Summer donation to their bill at checkout registers.

Forgotten Harvest and Gleaners Community Food Bank are partnering with Hollywood and other corporate and community donors to help to provide 2 million meals to hungry southeast Michigan children this summer through the Hunger Free Summer campaign.

Each dollar donated provides eight meals through summer lunch distributions, mobile pantries and other programs aimed at getting kids the nutritious food they need.

"More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan receive free or reduced-fee meals during the school year," Gleaners Community Food Bank said in a statement. "In the summer months, they often go without."

Hunger Free Summer donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Charter One Foundation, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hiller’s and The Young Foundation.

Gleaners Community Food Bank offers these five ways to show your support:

  • Donate online at www.HungerFreeSummer.org
  • Call 888-332-7140. A Hunger Free Summer representative will process your donation.
  • Text HFS to 85944. A $10 donation will be automatically added to your cell phone bill. Message and data rates may apply.
  • Mail your donation to: Hunger Free Summer, P.O. Box 1380, Troy, MI 48099
  • Add a donation of $1, $3, $5 or more at Hollywood Market and all Hiller’s checkout registers.
