Bastone Brewery to Add Space on First, Second Floors

Royal Oak City Commission approves proposal to expand the popular downtown restaurant and bar by 45 seats.

Bastone Brewery is growing up – literally – after the Royal Oak City Commission on Monday unanimously approved a plan to increase its indoor seating capacity.

The restaurant and pub plans to add seating space to the Main Street building's second floor by eliminating office space previously leased to a tenant.

The proposal adds 22 tabletop seats and five bar stools to the first floor and 18 new seats on the second floor, expanding from a capacity of 421 guests to 466.

Royal Oak Police said it believes an additional 45 seats will have minimal impact on its department.

In May, a request was made to add an outdoor service area on top of Café Habana, which is part of the same building, for 30 patrons. That request has been put on hold until the business has an opportunity to meet with Jim Schultz, the newly appointed chairman of the nearby St. Paul Lutheran Church congregation.

"The brewery is committed to a good working relationship with St. Paul and therefore is content with holding off on that portion of the request at this time," Lt. Tom Goad wrote in a memo to commissioners. Goad said he expects the brewery to return to the commission in the near future to ask for the outdoor service area.
