Classic Car Owners Show Off Hood Ornaments

The emblems are as unique as the vehicles and their owners.

Originally used as a temperature blow off unit – if the radiator got too hot it would pop off to release pressure – the first hood ornaments were actually thermometers, letting the driver know how hot the engine was getting. Today, those same thermometers are a collector's dream.

Many manufacturers began using elaborate hood ornaments, similar to a mascot. Every make and model seemed to be graced by some type of design.

Perched upon Denny and Jane Nespoli's 1976 Coupe de Ville Cadillac is an original chrome “Goddess” hood ornament. “That lady has been with us since the first day we met, over 35 years ago” said Jane Nespoli, of Latrobe, PA.

Other classic car owners get a little creative, like the golfer standing upon Jan and Bob Clark’s 1933 Chevy Master 5 coupe. They came all the way from Essex, Ontario.
