Martha Reeves Honored at Emagine in Royal Oak

Martha Reeves, one of many artists who helped to create the Motown sound, put her handprints and signature in cement for the Detroit Historical Society’s Detroit Legends Plaza at the in Royal Oak today.

Reeves told reporters it was fun to stick her hands in the cement, a first for the 70-year-old songstress.

"This felt great," Reeves said. "I used to make mud pies and I'd make my brother eat them. But this was more fun than mud."

Reeves, whose hit songs with the Vandellas include Heat Wave and Dancing in the Streets, will be back at the Emagine tonight for a screening of the documentary Re:Generation Music Project, in which she is featured. The film starts at 8 p.m.

The Detroit Legends Plaza is part of the Detroit Historical Society’s Past Forward campaign, a fundraising effort to raise $20.1 million toward new and expanded exhibits, technology upgrades, educational offerings and enhancements to the Detroit Historical Museum, according to a museum press release.

The plaza is set to be unveiled in fall 2012.
