UPDATE: Michigan Girl Attacked by Raccoon Out of Surgery, Doctor 'Very Pleased'

UPDATE, Wednesday 4:50 p.m.: Nurse  navigator  Jennifer Brabant reports Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate has finished surgery. Charlotte is a Spring Lake girl whose face was attacked by a raccoon as an infant.

"The doctor is very pleased," Brabant said.

Kongkrit performed a radial forearm free flap in which he took a patch of skin from Charlotte's forearm to create what will become the inside foundation of her nose.

"It not a fully formed beautiful nose, but she has a nose now, and it looks very good," Brabant said, cautioning that this is just the first surgery. "I don't want anyone to have high expectations. The average person is not  going to say 'Hey that looks great' but we know it looks just the way it is supposed to at this point."

Wednesday 3:45 p.m.: While waiting for daughter Charlotte's surgery to be completed, the Ponce family grabbed a late lunch in the cafeteria at Beaumont Hospital.

"We talked to the doctor eariler and everything is going good," said Sharon Ponce, Charlotte's adoptive mother.

The family arrived at the hospital at  6 a.m. and still has a few hours to go. Tim Ponce said the family has given numberous interviews today.

"When I was in high school I was voted most shy," said Sharon. "I have never talked so much in my life."

When Charlotte was 3 and a half months old, her birth mother laid her down for a nap with a bottle and then left her unattended. A raccoon somehow got inside her room eating off parts of her face.

Tuesday 1:30 p.m.: Royal Oak Patch has been following the story of 10-year-old when she was just an infant, since July.

Charlotte Ponce is the with Beaumont's Craniofacial Clinic and she is in Royal Oak this week for craniofacial reconstruction and microsurgery that will reshape her nose, ear and lips. Her first procedure is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

On the eve of her surgery, Charlotte spent the day at the with her parents Tim and Sharon Ponce, and 11-year-old brother Marshall.

"It's a funny thing for someone who was attacked by an animal to love animals so much," Tim said of his duaghter.

Betsy Meister, associate curator of mammals, gave the Ponce family a tour of the zoo that included stops at the Artic Ring of Life and Great Apes of Harambee. Charlotte even got to feed special treats to the reticulated giraffes.

"This is go great," Sharon said. "We haven't been on a vacation since Charlotte's accident." The last time Sharon was at the Detroit Zoo was 24 years ago, she said.
