VIDEO: Shrine First-Graders Perform Living Stations of the Cross
Shrine students get into the spirit of Holy Week in Royal Oak.
As part of Holy Week preparations, 65 first-graders from Shrine Grade School took a bus across town to Shrine Academy and performed living Stations of the Cross for approximately 150 seventh- and eighth-graders.
“This is a wonderful way to enter into the spirit of Holy Week,” said Gabrielle Erken, principal of the academy. “It’s very important for the middle school students to see the authentic and firm belief of the younger children. They are so open and transparent in their faith.”
First grade teachers Kris Cook, Michelle Carmichael and Dawn Nyikes have been orchestrating the living stations for four years. The liturgy was special for the children because many had siblings in the stands watching.
The first-graders also enjoyed their first trip on a school bus. They sang special hymns on the short bus trip.
“This is a great way to build relationships between the two campuses,” said Erken.
