Wednesday afternoon dozens of members of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and guests enjoyed Tex Mex food and drinks following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Royal Oak's newest restaurant, Cantina Diablo's.

Co-owner Brian Kramer is thrilled with the restaurant's location, the former home of Memphis Smoke at the southwest corner of 11 Mile Road and Main Street, where photographers spilled out into busy afternoon traffic to catch shots of the well-attended event. Between the busy location and menu – which retains a bit more of the Texas side than its popular sister location in Ferndale – Kramer expects the eatery and entertainment spot to be a success.

Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison said the same."I love it. It's nice and quite a change from what it was," Ellison said. "Based on what I have heard I expect it will be a real popular place."

Grand opening attendees had positive things to say about the atmosphere, service and menu.

While dozens of people munched on chips and salsa, tamales, ribs and margaritas, local businessman George Greenough said the shrimp wrapped in bacon were delicious.

"I think this is a significant improvement; Memphis Smoke was getting a little dated and needed to be refurbished," Greenough said. "Cantina Diablo's did an excellent job of doing that."

We walked downtown last night at 9:00 p.m. and checked it out. Wow! The interior is really exciting and loud. It was packed. 20 minute waits for a table.

I'm still bummed that Memphis Smoke is gone. This better be something if it will replace it. Bet you won't hear good music any more.

I love mexican food, but will definitely miss Memphis Smoke. It was one of the best local spots to hear the blues.
