PHOTOS: Zumba Open for Business at New Location

Walk-up Mexican grill moves across Main Street.

Zumba Mexican Grille has been its new digs on the other side of Main Street for just over a week. The eatery will celebrate its official Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. on June 6 with the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce. Owner Tim Castañeda said the bigger location at 304 N. Main St., next to the Emagine Theatre, allowed the establishment to add more seating. The new location will also allow Zumba to offer a few more items, such as nachos, soup and salads, he added. Zumba moved into the former Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store on May 11. Oberweis opened another store at 32808 Woodward Ave., just south of 14 Mile, in 2010.

Patch Drives: Hey, Chevy Suburban, is This Love I'm Feelin'?

I thought I wanted to ditch the big ride – until I drove a loaded 2012 Chevy Suburban.

Editor's note: This is the latest in a series. Read all of the Patch Drives installments here. Here’s the thing: I thought I was ready to ditch the big ride. I thought I was looking for something more compact — well, as compact as you can get while loading four kids and all their stuff.  I thought those things until I drove a loaded 2012 Chevy Suburban.  Two days in the Suburban rekindled my passion for extra large cars (and big hair bands, too, courtesy of SiriusXM Radio).  When I drove my giant custom van into the parking lot of Matthews-Hargreaves Chevrolet in Royal Oak, I admit I got what is becoming a familiar twinge of nerves.  Like I’m going on yet another first date. Will they like me? Will I like them? Before I jumped down out of …

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Tips for Spring Cleaning

We peek into the wash buckets of some of the areas savviest spring cleaners, who reveal 12 great tips to help clean up your act.

When interior designer Brian Clay Collins  of Grosse Pointe embarks on his annual spring-clean at his northern Michigan home, it’s with glass cleaners, vinegar and lint-free towels in-hand, among other things. “The absolute requirement for clean wood floors is warm water with a bit of white vinegar, used with a big sponge rinsed frequently,” said Collins, who owns Brian Clay Collins Design. “This is all done, alas, on hands and knees!!” Like hundreds of other homeowners who now are focusing on sprucing up, freshening and deep-cleaning their homes, Collins swears by favorite products. For example, he prefers Glass Plus for cleaning glass “becaue it’s ammonia-free, so less likely to damage the silvering on mirrors.” Dr. Jennifer Bonde, owner…

Zoo is Hopping with Kangaroo Joeys

The Detroit Zoo’s Australian Outback Adventure is home to six red kangaroo joeys.

Six red kangaroo joeys are growing by leaps and bounds – both in and out of their mothers’ pouches – at the Detroit Zoo’s Australian Outback Adventure. Two females – Sheila, born in June 2011 to JoAnn, and Isa, born in August 2011 to Charlotte – can be seen exploring their habitat with the adult mob. The four youngest joeys, all still hidden in the pouch, were born in January and April of this year. Their genders and names will be determined when they emerge. “It’s always a lot of fun to see a joey poke its head out of its mother’s pouch, and there will be plenty of opportunities for that in the coming weeks,” said Robert Lessnau, Detroit Zoological Society Curator of Mammals. “Sheila and Isa are already hopping around and are easy to spot…

What Do You Want to See at the Former Northern TV Site?

This building at 1321 E. 11 Mile Rd. in Royal Oak would make a great ... you fill in the blank!

Royal Oak has a lot of great businesses on 11 Mile Road, but is there anything missing? A certain type of establishment or a new retail store? This building at 1321 E. 11 Mile Rd. is in the site of the former Northern TV. Michael Sheppard, owner of Northern TV since 1993, relocated the company  to 27633 John R Rd. in Madison Heights on Jan. 2. after the building was puchased by Imad Sitto. “We tried to buy the building, but we were outbid,” Sheppard said of the 1949 structure. “It’s just as well. The building was starting to fall apart, and the new owner has deeper pockets than we do. He is going to fix it up. When he is done, I am sure it will be a very positive improvement to 11 Mile Road.” Those improvements are beginning to take shape…

Royal Oak DDA Interested in Hotel Development on Former Fresard Site

Board members generally like the concept but want more information from the new owners of the Main Street property.

Members of Royal Oak's Downtown Development Authority (DDA) showed interest in exploring the development of a hotel at the former Fresard auto dealership site on Main Street, in which the unidentified owners are looking for incentives or financial assistance. David Griffin of CBRE, a full-service real estate services company, represents the new owner of the property, a private group doing business as 400 Main LLC. Griffin, who would not reveal the names of the new owners at Wednesday's DDA meeting, said the group purchased the Fresard property a few weeks ago. “They have title to the asset,” he said. At the end of January, the "for sale" sign on the Fresard property was taken down and Michael Southen of Signature Associates, a commercial …

Art Van Furniture in Royal Oak will transform a large portion of its parking structure beneath its Woodward Avenue store into a state-of-the-art Scott Shuptrine Interiors showplace that will sell everything from custom-built furniture to exclusive rugs and window treatments. The golden shovel was on hand Tuesday morning when executives and community leaders gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking of the new 12,500-square-foot design center. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-October.
