Beaumont offering spring program for women with family history of cancer

Required information session April 3 or April 10 at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak

Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak is offering Silver Linings, an eight-week, mindfulness-based stress reduction program. The workshop helps women at risk for cancer learn how to reduce stress with tools including meditation, gentle yoga, mindful eating and communication.

The program is for women who have a genetic mutation, such as BRCA positive, or a very strong family history of cancer. These factors put them at a high risk for cancer, whether or not they’ve had cancer.

While there is no charge for Silver Linings, space is limited and registration is required.  All interested participants must attend an information/registration session at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 or Thursday, April 10 at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Those interested in the program should contact Pam Jablonski at 248-551-4645 or pjablonski@beaumont.edu.

Weekly meetings are led by Ruth Lerman, M.D., an experienced teacher of meditation and yoga. She is a specialist in breast disease and three-time breast cancer survivor. The program meets weekly for eight Thursday evenings and one Sunday day-long retreat. Participants receive four CDs to facilitate their home practice.

Explains Dr. Lerman, “Our research has shown that program participants experience an improved quality of life.”

A research team from Oakland University and Beaumont Health System completed a randomized, controlled study of Silver Linings in September 2010. Their work was published in the September 2011 Annals of Surgical Oncology.

Almost 300 women have benefited from Silver Linings training since 2005.
