The much-anticipated Foodtruck Cafe opened Monday in Berkley to diners' delight.
Owner Kerry Johnson said it was smooth sailing as the family-friendly venue that embraces the growing popularity of food trucks welcomed its first customers.
"We opened up right at 7 o'clock and we had customers right at 7:01," he said, adding business was steady throughout the day.
The eatery at the former Coffee Beanery location on Woodward Avenue offers the following three options under one roof.
- Sideshow Sandwich Emporium features sandwiches with Coney Island-themed names, including unusual options such as "The Conundrum" made with smoked bacon, avocado, Tater Tots, tomato, onions and mayo.
- Nacho Ordinary Nachos offers a variety of options to top the traditional chips-and-cheese dish, as well as other Mexican-inspired favorites.
- Air-stream Coffee serves Illy brand coffee, as well as limited breakfast options, out of a booth decorated to look like the back half of an Airstream trailer.
"I had a (steak) burrito and it was really awesome and I finished the whole thing," Sophie Hirsch, 9, of Huntington Woods said.
Her mom said Foodtruck Cafe did a good job of accommodating Sophie's dairy allergy by making her "The Big Jefe" without cheese.
"It's very unique," added Alyssa Hirsch, 14. "It's original and very creative and quite tasty."
