Meters double duty as bicycle racks?

Just noticed this apparently neat idea of hitching bicycles to parking meters apparently initiated by Don Johnson I am told. Initially it seems like a great idea. I always supported more bicycles downtown so finally after enough harangue on my part and others there will also be a corral by Bruegers Bagel similar to what Ferndale initiated over a year ago. I pointed out two years ago to our stone eared commission and mayor that studies showing that downtowns favoring bicycles increased their business.
Now as far as this cute idea I see only one drawback which is possible damage to a car by a bicycle, or the reverse due to the close proximity of a hitched bicycle to a parked car. Parallel parking seems to be a lost art and only time will tell I guess. Now if only I can convince them that additional comfortable wood (or recycled plastic) benches in our small downtown park and downtown corners will also go a long way to make walking downtown more hospitable and friendly, especially for seniors.. Our eagle eyed, lightning quick, over zealous parking Nazis certainly do not help in that department.
