Zebra Crosswalks: Complete Streets Shows Its Stripes on Woodward

New enhanced zebra crosswalks are supposed to increase pedestrian safety.

Drivers are not the only people benefiting from MDOT's $4.8 million construction program for Woodward Avenue. Pedestrians are seeing some enhancements, too. 

Thanks to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Woodward Avenue Action Association (WA3), new enhanced zebra crosswalks were installed in July, which are meant to be improvements over conventional crosswalks that consists of only two lines.

"This is a new enhancement in MDOT’s toolbox so we are testing it in the Woodward corridor.  It is supposed to increase the visibility of the crosswalk to motorists and increase pedestrian safety," said MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi.

It's all part on an ongoing Complete Streets effort, initiated by WA3, to make roads more accessible to walkers and bicyclists.
