Letter: Locker Room Crime Watch Alert is Unsettling

LA Fitness alerts patrons to to lock their valuables in their trunk, according to reader.

The following was written by Virginia Robinson and shared with Royal Oak Patch:

A trip to LA Fitness Royal Oak this morning was interesting. I have always locked all my belongings in a locker when I am there and used a personal lock. But based on the crime reports from the police department, even locked lockers aren't safe at this location.

So I was greeted by a stop sign sticker and a crime watch alert note in the locker. After reading those, I was paranoid the entire time I was showering about my locked locker being broken into. I can't believe they actually go as far as to tell people to lock their valuables in their trunk!

This location is notorious for having cars broken into. I have never seen an employee monitoring the parking lot and rarely see them in the locker room. I was in the locker room for an hour this morning and never once saw an employee. There were definitely a few women who were just loitering with no real purpose for being there. LA Fitness needs to take a serious look at their safety practices.

I will not be going to this location again. Where the heck am I supposed to leave my purse when I am on the treadmill?

So as a public service announcement, if you go to LA Fitness Royal Oak, think about going to one of their other locations and don't bring anything you can't carry with you the whole time you are there.

Unfortunately, in a society where God is removed from everything, including their hearts, reports like these will continue to rise, no matter the location.

Got nothing to do with God my dear, it's theft. LA will not take care of their customers, so speak with your feet.

There are other gyms to go to. Based on the crime reported about L.A. Fitness why would anyone go there.

Thieves who target fitness centers also know that members leave purses under the seat or in the trunk of their vehicle. Our vehicle was broken into - along with 3 other vehicles by the thief punching out the locks on the driver's side door. Of the 3 - he got two purses! So, I wouldn't trust leaving things in my car. LA Fitness ought to be able to come up with a better plan.

LA Fitness seems to get hit the hardest. But most fitness clubs will tell you the same - lock your valuables in your cars with doors locked and out of site. Many of the thefts at fitness clubs are due to vehicles and lockers not being locked. If you look at the crime reports - my favorite was "Gun stolen from front seat of unlocked car". What idiot leaves a gun sitting out in a front car.

I'm amazed at how many Police reports stating purse stolen, smart phone stolen, lap top stolen - all left in plain sight within either a locked or unlocked car. A lot of thefts of that nature are thefts of convenience, and wouldn't happen if the item(s) were not clearly visible and tempting. As for LA Fitness or other such places, isn't there usually somebody at the front desk or sales desk? Why not put a locker there, for folks to lock their valuables and put those lockers under obvious and good surveillance. Wouldn't that stop thefts...?

The 10 Commandments and God’s Way of Life ;Thou shall not steal. "Got nothing to do with God my dear, it's theft." sorry,Elizabeth is right.its also everyones responsibility to stop leaving valuables in plain sight or unsecured,to tempt a thief.

Another bible thumper. what a freaking relief. Hey, how about using your brain and not leaving stuff in plain sight?

K.scott if you read the crime report attached, people are actually stealing the entire car regularly. In addition to that, many lockers that are locked are being broken. There is not much you can do about that besides add security or shut the place down. Places like lifetime fitness do not have this issue. This is a LA fitness specific issue.
