Royal Oak Chili Cook Off This Saturday

Local restaurants face off in annual chili cook-off.

The weather may be cooling off, but the Royal Oak Jaycees will bring a little heat to the city with the third annual Royal Oak Chili Cook-Off from 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Local restaurants will enter their chili into the competition to earn of one of several titles, including Best of the Best (determined by a group of guest “celebrity” judges), Spiciest, People’s Choice, Jaycees’ Choice, Best Vegetarian and Most Original. This year’s participating restaurants include Lily's Seafood Grill & Brewery, BlackFinn American Saloon, Bagger Dave’s and Hamlin’s Corner.

“We’re thrilled to have some great local restaurants step up and compete in this year’s cook-off,” said Royal Oak Chili Cook-Off Chairperson Jennifer Sakey. “Every chef puts their own spin on the chili that they enter, so it’s always fun to see – and taste – their creations.”

The Royal Oak Chili Cook-Off also will include a silent auction; samples from sponsors Treat Dreams and Trader Joe’s; and live music from Doug Clare, Silver Compass, Quarter to Four and the Romeo Flynns.

Tickets to the event cost $7.50 in advance (available online at   rochilicookoff.eventbrite.com) or $10 at the door. Children under 12 get in for free. Adult admission includes five chili-tasting tickets. Additional tasting tickets will be available for purchase at the event.

Proceeds from the Royal Oak Chili Cook-Off benefit the Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County, the Royal Oak Animal Shelter and the Royal Oak Jaycees.

“Last year we were able to donate $1,000 to each of these organizations” said Bridget Smith-Botos, Royal Oak Jaycees Vice President of Community Development. “We hope we are able to increase that significantly this year."

This was a truly great event yesterday! Hat's off to the Royal Oak Jaycees for all their hard work and the fantastic chili offered by local restaurants! I have to say Black Finn's Chili was my favorite, with Lilly's coming in as a close second. Cheers to a fun Saturday night in Royal Oak!
