Best of Snow: Royal Oak Family Builds Igloo

The Hejka family snow hut is the "coolest" thing in town, if you get my drift.

A Royal Oak family has found a way to make snow and fun and functional, too.

The Hejka kids – Alex, 16, Kevin, 12, Theresa, 10 and Angela, 7 – have built a backyard snow hut large enough to accommodate the entire family, including older brothers Scott, 20, and Craig, 22, for a little winter fun.

The ambitious igloo project began about a week ago when temps started to drop and turn the recent snowfall into packing perfection. Day after day the kids added more tiers until the dome was complete.

"We had to eventually make our own packed snow because there was none on the ground," said Alex.

"I was in charge of filling all the cracks," said Kevin, while Angela applied fresh snow to the structure to keep the igloo bright white instead of a dirty gray tone.

It's the perfect family hangout, according to Theresa.

The children, who attend Shrine schools, are taking advantage of Martin Luther King Day, which means no school, to savor their hideaway. It's the perfect place to sip some hot chocolate just for kicks.
