Royal Oak Letter Carrier to Receive 'Humanitarian of the Year' Award in Washington D.C.

John Dick, of Royal Oak, receives top honor for delivering mail and good cheer, too.

A Royal Oak letter carrier will be recognized as a hero this week in Washington D.C.

John Dick, 54, of Royal Oak, will represent thousands of letter carriers when he receives the Humanitarian of the Year on Thursday at the Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill.

Dick delivered mail and good cheer to the hospital bed of Gregg Glowacz, of Royal Oak, whom he'd befriended on his route. Glowacz suffered an aneurysm in 2007 that left him a quadriplegic.

"Gregg was in the hospital for seven months and John would visit him all the time," said Vicki Glowacz, a mammography technician at Beaumont Hospital. "He would call us and bring cards and letters for Gregg to the hospital."

Gregg Glowacz died on Oct. 4, 2012, peacefully at his home in Royal Oak. He was 56 years of age.
