Woodward Dream Cruise: Events All Week

From live entertainment in Ferndale to Chevy Volt parades in Bloomfield and everything in between, the annual car lovers' fest offers something for everyone.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is officially 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 20 – the third Saturday of August for the 17th year in a row. But the cruising, watching and activities don't wait for the official day. Here's what's going on this week up and down Woodward:

Chevrolet Centennial Woodward Parade

When: 2-4 p.m. Aug. 18

Where: The parade will start on Woodward Avenue at Long Lake Road, travels south to I-696 and returns.

Chevrolet will kick off the Woodward Dream Cruise with a parade featuring 50 Chevrolet Volts and their owners in town for Volt's first Cruise, 20 employee-owned Chevrolet heritage vehicles, the new Camaro ZL1and Chevrolet Sonic, and vehicles from the GM Heritage Collection.

Berkley

Champagne Cruise

When: 6-10 p.m. Aug. 19

Where: , Berkley

The ninth annual and Forgotten Harvest fundraiser features chilled champagne, food samples from Metro Detroit, live entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets are $150 ($100 of which is tax deductible) and are available at www.forgottenharvest.org.

 

Berkley CruiseFest

When: 6-11 p.m. Aug. 19

Where:  Berkley

  • 6-9 p.m.: Kid’s inflatable Games (north side of 12 Mile between Tyler and Gardner streets)  
  • 6:30 p.m.: Classic Car Parade. Staging at Roseland Park Cemetery, 12 Mile and Woodward, begins at 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration of vehicles required.  
  • 7:30-9 p.m.: Tri-Community Coalition Street Dance on Griffith north of 12 Mile  
  • 7:30-11 p.m.: Live music on 12 Mile Road at Robina Avenue  
  • All day: Sidewalk sales throughout the Berkley business district
  • All evening: Food and beverages available for purchase throughout the downtown business district.

Birmingham

Birmingham Cruise Event

When: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 20

Where: downtown Birmingham along Old Woodward from Brown Street to Lincoln

View hundreds of classic cars on display, plus live entertainment, food from local restaurants and a kids area.

Chevrolet activities

When: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 20

Where:  Birmingham Triangle, in front of the 555 Triangle, where Old Woodward meets Woodward

Some 60 cars will be on display, ranging from heritage vehicles to the new Volt, Sonic, Cruze Eco, and Camaro ZL1.  Also on display will be vehicles from the Transformers movies and a selection of Indy 500 pace vehicles.  Visitors will be able to capture themselves with a Time Splice 3D camera.  

Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, is bringing two of his Camaros, and will be signing posters from 11 a.m. -1 p.m.

 

Hunter House activities

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 19

Where: Hunter House

11 a.m.-4 p.m.: Legend, The Band performs oldies from the 1950s and ‘60s, Motown, Doo-Wop and a wide range of classic rock ’n’ roll hits.

6-10 p.m.: Toppermost Band plays Beatles music.

DJ Boogie Brian will finish off the night.

 

Hunter House activities

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 20

Where: Hunter House

Elvis Presley tribute artist Fred Wolfe will go through his entire set list multiple times. Classic Beat will perform classic rock and roll tunes from the 1950s and 60s from 1-4 p.m. and DJ Boogie Brian will again be there throughout the day until the final burger is sold.

Bloomfield Hills-Bloomfield Township

Corvettes on Woodward

When: noon-midnight Aug. 17

Where: Radisson Kingsley Hotel, Bloomfield Hills; Woodward Avenue; Moose Preserve

After Corvette owners tour the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, they’ll gather at the Radisson Hotel to socialize to the tunes of DJ Eric, check out displays from vendors and the National Corvette Museum. The new 2012 Corvette will be on hand as will several other unique Corvettes. Seminars will take place during the day on subjects such as fuel injection systems and Callaways.

Donations of cash and food benefit the Open Hands Food Pantry.

At 7:30 p.m., the Corvettes will be lead by local police down Woodward to the pantry at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Royal Oak to deliver donations.

After cruising Woodward, there is a meet and greet at the Moose Preserve at Square Lake and Woodward.

Chevy Volt Homecoming

When: Aug. 17-19

Where: based out of the Radisson Kingsley Hotel, Bloomfield Hills

Just 50 Volt owners get to participate in this sold-out event, but fans can check out the electric cars when they participate in Chevrolet’s centennial Woodward parade 2-4 p.m.

 

The Earth Angels

When: Aug. 19

Where: Little Daddy’s restaurant, Bloomfield Hills

Little Daddy’s hosts The Earth Angels – a high energy theatrical dance show featuring ’50s and 60s music and costumes on August for two performances at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.Visit http://earthangelsontour.org/Events.htm or call Little Daddy’s for more information.

 

Bloomfield Township Classic Car Show

When: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Aug. 20

Where: Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield, 36600 Woodward Ave. (just south of Big Beaver Road)

Fun, family friendly car show that features classic and rare cars, a viewing area for the Woodward Dream Cruise, official merchandise sales, DJ, food, general parking and portable restrooms. New this year: DeLorean car clubs. Back again: Shelby Distribution USA and Superformance will have a display of Genuine Shelby Cobras and Superformance MKIII’s (Shelby licensed Cobras). Tunes from the ‘60s, food, bleacher seating, portable toilets – free to the public

Royal Oak

Kids Cruise

When: 4-8 p.m. Aug. 16

Where: Fifth and Sixth streets between Washington and Center

More information: The outdoor family gathering with an Explore-a-Truck area where kids can climb in police cars, fire trucks, dump trucks and inflatables. 

Entertainment will include music from Boogie Dynomite, Hype Syndicate, the Detroit School of Rock and Pop and The Candy Band. At sundown, Gnomeo & Juliet will play on an outdoor movie screen.

 will have a balloon artist,  is offering cool treats and children may create noodle art from . Plus, the tooth fairy will visit Bright Side Dental’s booth where kids can decorate boxes for their teeth. Dobrasevic Food Company and  will offer an arts and crafts activity.

Exhausted parents can visit  for a chair massage.

GM Design Car Show

When: 1-9 p.m. Aug. 17

Where: Northwood shopping center, southwest corner of Woodward and 13 Mile Road.  

The GM Design team will host a car show featuring personal vehicles owned by members of the Design team, along with live musical performances.


Motown Muscle Breakfast

When: 8:15-9:30 a.m. Aug. 19

Where: Duggan's Irish Pub, Royal Oak

Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser will participate in the Motown Muscle breakfast and panel discussion.  The new Camaro ZL1 will be on display.  Jeff Gilbert and John McElroy will host the panel, which will also include representatives from Ford and Chrysler.  The public can register online.

 

Performance Division and Performance Parts Display at Memorial Park

When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 19-20

Where: Memorial Park, northeast corner of Woodward and 13 Mile Road

The park will host a car show featuring cars that have been customized with performance enhancements plus classic cars, displays and food court.

 

Family Fun Zone at Pioneer Park

When: noon-6 p.m. Aug. 20

Where: Pioneer Park on Woodward north of Normandy

There will be clowns, face painting, inflatables and an entertainment stage. There will be a photo booth sponsored by Conner Creek Academy East and Kroger will be on hand with a special coloring project for the kids and free samples.

 

Chevy Pit Stops

When: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 20 

Where: Chevrolet is setting up pit stops in three locations on Woodward Avenue where cruisers can stop in an air-conditioned area and have their classic cars photographed in front of murals depicting three historic diners.  They can also enter a contest with WOMC radio to win prizes for the best classic Chevy photos and best overall car photos.  Locations are:

Art Van, 32310 Woodward Ave. (south of 14 Mile Road) – Ted's Drive In

CVS, 30900 Woodward Ave. (at 13 Mile Road) – The Susie Q

Jax Kar Wash, 27054 Woodward Ave. (at 11 Mile Road) – Totem Pole

Troy

Meritor Classic Car Show and Habitat for Humanity Build-a-Wall Competition

When: Aug. 18 - build: 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; car show: 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Where: Meritor Troy headquarters, south employee parking lot, 2135 W. Maple Rd., Troy 48084

What: The ninth annual Meritor Classic Car Show will showcase about 35 classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Meritor will also host Habitat for Humanity Detroit as more than 200 Meritor employee volunteers teaming up for the Build-A-Wall competition. The employees will comprise 34 teams to build 48 exterior and interior walls for the construction of a four-bedroom Habitat for Humanity house to be built in Detroit this fall. Last year’s Classic Car Show raised more than $11,000 for Habitat for Humanity Detroit.
