Awards for 48-Hour Film Project Set for Tuesday

The awards ceremony for submissions to the Detroit 48-Hour Film Festival will be held Tuesday at the Luna dance club in Royal Oak.

The held its final screening of locally made movies Thursday night at the in Royal Oak, and director Mike Maddigan called it a success.

The film festival brought together short movies made by 57 local movie crews and production companies. They were all written, filmed, edited and delivered within two days. Each team was assigned a different movie genre, such as fantasy, action thriller and comedy, among others. All teams were mandated to include the same character, line and prop. This year, the character was Dave or Diane Pellaton, who is a president of some sort. The prop was apples and the line, “When did that happen?”

Films could not exceed seven minutes in length.

A private awards ceremony, where the most acclaimed movies will win awards in several categories, will take place Tuesday at the in Royal Oak. Awards include best directing, best script, best cinematography and best acting. 

Apart from official awards, movie-goers also voiced praise for the films.

“I had no clue what to expect and I was impressed,” said Denise Mowatt, 51, of Whitmore Lake, a self-described movie lover who went on to praise the creativity and professional quality of the films. “I was so inspired.”

Brenda Gillies, 50, of Ann Arbor, praised the film festival for its short burst of entertaining movies, something she found refreshing in comparison to typical full-length movie fare.

“I can't stand sitting in a movie for two hours," said Gillies. “It's great for people with ADD.”
