Music Review: The Steven Shuetz Group - 'Floatin' in Space'

Jazzy-pop lead tracks have the potential to be smooth jazz chartbusters.

Columinst Gerry Boylan, of , plays the role of music critic with a review of 'Floatin' in Space' by the Steven Shuetz Group.

I had the great pleasure recently of attending a CD release party for Floatin’ in Space, an outstanding jazzy-pop recording, by the Steven Shuetz Group. Steven was the keyboardist/song writer for the very popular Detroit area based Orange Lake Drive. He’s an extraordinarily talented guy and the lead tracks T.G.I.F. and the Stand Up have the potential to be smooth jazz chartbusters.

I also enjoyed the vocals of the vivacious Deb Alane and Suzi Marsh accompanied by the very talented former Orange Lake Drive bassist Kenny Burch. A terrific addition to the group comes from Karl Peters, a jazz accordion player who provided unusually lilting touches to the music. It’s a wonderful collection of music from a local group that could go far.

Finally, the guitar player is our grand friend, Scott Ouellette.  A Huntington Wood native and St. Mary’s of Royal Oak graduate. In the 1970’s, Scott introduced our gang of friends to a host of rock and jazz groups and had us attending concerts at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge and seeing Freddy Hubbard, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Weather Report and many more.  He has always been a gifted guitar player and he displays his skills remarkably on this CD. Yes, I’m biased, but buy a copy and I’m sure you’ll agree with me.

The CD is available on Amazon.  I’ll let you know when you can catch the group live.
