Stagecrafters' 2011-12 Season Offers Wide Variety of Shows

Royal Oak's Baldwin Theatre will feature shows from a Disney Channel-inspired Youth Theatre production to a Detroit-based intimate performance on the 2nd Stage.

Stagecrafters' 57th season will feature an exciting variety of shows never before presented at the  in downtown Royal Oak.

"Our next season allows us to focus on a variety of artistic endeavors, from light-hearted family musicals to classic drama to stories of endurance and perseverance,” said Stagecrafters President Linda Zublick. “We always look to entertain our audiences with quality live theater and are excited to really present a slate of shows which offers something for everyone."

The new season begins in July and will open with the Youth Theatre production of Disney's Camp Rock The Musical. This family-friendly performance will be directed by Zublick and will run July 22-24 and 28-31. The musical is based on the hit Disney Channel original movies Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

The classic beloved musical Meet Me in St. Louis, directed by Dolly Scheibelhut, comes to the Main Stage on Sept. 16-18, 22-25, 29-30, Oct. 1-2 and Oct. 7-9. The musical is about a family in St. Louis. When the head of the household accepts a job in New York City, the prospect of moving threatens to change their lives forever.

Wit brings an emotional performance to the 2nd Stage, Stagecrafters' contemporary theater. It will be directed by Jody Florkowski and will run Oct. 14-16 and 20-23. The play focuses on the last hours of Dr. Vivian Bearing and how she reassesses her life through the use of the English language and, especially, the use of wit.

The Crucible, directed by Ryan S. Moore, will run Nov. 4-6, 10-13 and 17-20 on the Main Stage. The play is a dramatization of the Salem, MA, witch trials.

The classic fairy tale Cinderella will be brought to life by the Youth Theatre and directed by Randy Wrisinger. The musical is scheduled to run Dec. 8-11.

Kiss of the Spider Woman will weave its dark tale on the Main Stage, directed by John Luther. This dark and shadow-layered musical will run Jan. 20-22, 26-29, Feb. 2-5 and Feb. 10-12. 

The intimate setting of the 2nd Stage works for The Last Five Years, directed by Jerry Haines. The musical will run March 2-4, 8-11 and 15-18. The story explores the five-year relationship between Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress, and Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist. The story starts with the actress at the end of the story and the novelist at the beginning.

Titanic The Musical is sure to be an emotional journey, setting sail on the Main Stage and directed by Rodel Salazar. It will run April 13-15, 19-22, 26-29 and May 4-6, 2012. 

Palmer Park will draw the audience in on the 2nd Stage on May 11-13 and 17-20, 2012. Directed by Tom Krell, the story follows a white family who moves into a black neighborhood after the Detroit race riots of 1967.

The Bad Seed is a dark and campy drama that will be performed on the Main Stage and be directed by Kathleen Lietz. It will run June 1-3, 7-10 and 14-17, 2012. The play tells the story of a little girl named Rhoda who, the tale reveals, killed one of her classmates — and who most certainly will kill again.

"I am excited about the diverse nature of the upcoming season,” Lietz said. “There is something in there for everyone — comedy, classic drama, musicals and a sinking ship."
