Tour de Théâtre Detroit Photo Exhibit at Royal Oak's Main Art

A visual tour of local vintage cinema and concert theaters.

The work of photographer Italia Millan, showcasing local theatres’ marquees, will be on exhibit at the Red Room of the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak during the entire month of July, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5, 7 – 9 pm. The opening reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Tour de Théâtre Detroit is an homage to the beautiful vintage cinema and concert theatres we are lucky to have in the Metro Detroit area. The photographer was inspired to work on this project by her love for the big screen and her fascination for colorful night photography. Millan and her husband, Don Hughes,  spent many nights and evenings traveling to different theatres so she could shoot images of their marquees and, in the process, they got to meet pretty amazing people -staff and volunteers- who run many of these historic jewels. Millan said, “As I immersed myself in the research for this project, I learned about the history of these places and the nostalgia that surrounds them. People always seem to cherish the good memories of their childhood movie theatre. Hopefully, this series inspires them to visit and continue to support these local landmarks.”

The photographs are a film-digital hybrid, shot in medium format film and printed digitally.
