Barnett and Piippo Named Coaches of the Year

The longtime Ravens' mentors were honored at Thursday's school board meeting.

David Barnett and Ryan Piippo of Royal Oak High School are the first recipients of the Chuck Jones Coach of the Year Award.

Named for the former Kimball High School teacher, coach and athletic director, the Chuck Jones Coach of the Year Award is awarded to coaches who excel in their endeavors on and off the field.

Coaches Barnett and Piippo, led the Ravens cross country team to Royal Oak High School's first regional title last year. The 2012 cross country also had two all-state athletes, Max Benoit and Ben Hill, and the team was awarded academic all-state honors.

In the 2013 spring season, the coaches led 83 athletes in track and field, of which four competed at the state championship level, with one all-state athlete (Hill).

"What's very important to know is everything they do is above and beyond any other coach I've had in my past," said Hill, a four-time all-stater. "I am so grateful to have had them."
