Royal Oak Raven Soars to Finals in Shoe Contest

The public has until 2 p.m. Sunday to help lift Ben Hill's shoe design to the finals.

When Alisa Hill told her son Ben Hill about a New Balance shoe design contest, he took the information and ran with it.

Hill, a junior at Royal Oak High School, is a cross country and track standout for the Ravens. Using a raven wing and his school colors for inspiration, Hill, who has never taken a visual imaging class, was one of approximately 4,000 high school students to enter the New Balance Cross Country Colorwars contest.

"The top 16 designs went into brackets," Hill said.

Judging for the championship bracket rounds is based on creativity, style and public votes. As of Friday night, Hill's design has soared into the finals.

The public has until 2 p.m. Tuesday to push Hill's spikes across the finish line. The winner will be announced on Aug. 28 at approximately 9 p.m.

"The winner gets 20 pairs of shoes for their team," Hill said.

The Ravens currently have 26 harriers on the roster. If Hill's design wins, he says the team will raise funds to buy six more pairs of shoes, which are valued at $125 each.
