Beaumont Health System named a '101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Company'

Beaumont Green Team leaders recognized at Sept. 18 event 

For the second year in a row, Beaumont Health System is recognized as a “101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Company” for leading green initiatives and exhibiting excellence in environmental responsibility.

Beaumont is the only health system in metro-Detroit recognized as a sustainable company by 101 Best and Brightest. 

Beaumont Green Team leaders will receive the 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies award on Sept.18 at Davenport University in Grand Rapids.

“We are truly honored to be recognized again as one of the state’s top green leaders,” says Kay Winokur, vice president of Quality and Professional Services and co-chair of the Green Team at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. “The dedication and efforts of our Green Team members and hospital leadership have allowed sustainable practices to become a great part of Beaumont’s culture.”

Some of Beaumont’s sustainability efforts include:

  • Energy - Beaumont has implemented 55 projects that have generated more than $2.1 million in savings.   
  • Innovation - Employee teams conduct two-day kaizen, or process-improvement events, every month to seek low-cost solutions to reduce energy and water consumption.
  • Green technology - Beaumont has invested in daylight harvesting systems, EPEAT electronics and computers; and 1,413 LED lighting fixtures.
  • Supply chain - Beaumont has worked with suppliers to reduce excess packaging and materials to achieve less waste. The hospital also works with vendors who offer “green” office supply products; 30 percent of Beaumont’s purchases are made from eco-friendly materials.
  • Transportation/commuting - Beaumont offers an employee carpool program and has more than 120 participants. The hospital also encourages bike riding. The campus has clearly marked bike lanes and provides employees bikes to use and covered racks to store bikes.

Beaumont Health System is committed to implementing cost-effective solutions to reduce waste and conserve energy, while education to employees about environmental issues. Through efforts to reduce energy and water consumption, Beaumont saves a minimum of $1.3 million each year.

The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies celebrates organizations that inspire and produce green technology to impact the industry and environment.

It celebrates those companies that are making their businesses more sustainable, the lives of their employees better and improving the community locally and globally as a whole. The 101 Best and Brightest program provides year-long education, benchmarking, assessment tools and interaction throughout Michigan.
