Beaumont Health System celebrates Earth Day in a big way

Beaumont Health System celebrates Earth Day with events at its three hospitals.

April 22, 1970 marked the beginning of the environmental movement in the United States, when a group of 20 million Americans rallied for a healthier environment. Today, it is recognized as Earth Day, a worldwide demonstration supporting environmental protection and preservation. Each year, organizations around the world participate in Earth Day by introducing simple, inexpensive steps to becoming environmentally friendly. Beaumont Health System is one of them.

This year, on April 22, each of the hospitals will be observing the holiday and promoting environmental betterment in their own way.

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak will be hosting an Earth Day fair, open to the public, which will focus on environmentally-friendly transportation alternatives, such as carpooling, walking, biking or taking the bus. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Mackinac dining room in the South Tower lobby. Information tables will be set up around the lobby, including displays from regional transportation alternatives, such as Smart Bus, vRide, MichiVan, KLM Bike Shop and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. Other tables will feature the Fit Bit Challenge, the Beaumont Green Team, Beaumont Gardeners and the Commuter Challenge. In addition, electronic car demos will be held outside the South Tower entrance.

Beaumont Hospital, Troy will celebrate Earth Day with environmentally-friendly activities including recycling opportunities, a book exchange and eco-friendly product samples. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the second floor atrium.

Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe is also taking part in the Earth Day festivities with a book exchange and an Earth Day TV presentation, which will feature information on ways to engage in environmentally-friendly practices. The event will take place in the lower level, café conference room from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Beaumont Health System is dedicated to implementing cost-effective solutions to reduce waste, conserve energy, educate employees on conservation and direct them to resources where they can learn more about environmental issues. Through efforts to reduce energy and water consumption, Beaumont will save a minimum of $1.3 million each year.

Beaumont Health System received a 2012 Michigan Green Leader Award by the Detroit Free Press, and was recognized as one of 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies by Corp! Magazine. Both awards focus on identifying organizations that are committed to leading environmentally friendly initiatives and exhibiting excellence in environmental responsibility.
