Artists Watch the Chalk Dust Fly

High winds made chalk art challenging Saturday for dozens of area artists participating in for Chalk & Chocolate Tour in downtown Royal Oak, which continues Sunday.

"It's a real metaphor for life," Ann Arbor Artist David Zinn said, "because every time you make a mark on the ground three-quarters of it blows away."

Such is the challenge of chalk art, especially when it is outdoors and in Michigan.

Gusty winds aside, dozens of area artists took to the sidewalks of Royal Oak on Saturday to participate in the inaugural Chalk & Chocolate Tour. Among the tools specific to the craft were knee pads and rubber-tipped gloves, an attempt to save artists' fingerprints.
