Bites Nearby: Tom's Oyster Bar

New chef brings fresh approach to all Royal Oak favorite. This seafood tavern is noisy, informal and comfortable.

, 318 S. Main Street, Royal Oak; (248) 541-1186.

There's nothing more appealing than a seafood tavern, whether it's perched on a weathered wharf somewhere or on a city street. This  particular example of the genre has been a fixture in downtown Royal Oak for years.

Unpretentious, noisy, informal, with the signature blue-and-white checked vinyl tablecloths and a menu of fresh fish and seafood chalked on a board, it is simply a comfortable place with friendly servers and bartenders who know much of the clientele.

Sushi was recently dropped from the menu, but there's still plenty to choose from: sauteed tilapia, tequila/lime swordfish, Florida grouper, crabcakes, and, of course, six varieties of fresh oysters.

A new chef, John Acedillo, formerly of the Jazz Cafe at the Music Hall, is bringing a fresh approach to the kitchen.
