Crain's: Royal Oak is 'Tech Hot Spot'

Crain's Detroit Business lists nearly 30 creative/tech companies that have opened in or have moved to downtown Royal Oak since 2010.

Known for it's nightlife, with more 70 bars and restaurants, Royal Oak is slowly becoming a destination for entrepreneurs and technology companies, too, according to Crain's Detroit Business.

Superstar tech company, Vectorform, has been in the headlines lately for it move to  the second floor space of 500 S. Main, which is currently home to Barnes & Noble, but residents may not be aware that nearly 30 creative and technology companies have set up offices downtown since 2010, according to Crain's.

No better place to be

"There is no better place than Royal Oak to do business in the state," said Greg Nasto, founder and president of Mousetrap Group, LLC, which is based on the third floor of 104 W. Fourth St. in downtown Royal Oak. "We never have to leave the office. All my clients want to come to Royal Oak for the experience."

It also doesn't hurt that there are five freeways within 15 minutes of his office, added Nasto, who also lives in downtown Royal Oak.

"Sure there are some challenges that come with being in the center of everything  – the Holiday Magic Parade, the Oak Apple Run, the Clay, Glass & Metal Show – but I love it," he said.

Mousetrap Mobile's niche is municipal text marking and communication programs.

"Mobile marketing is where it's at. Statistics show that 90 percent of texts are read within three minutes and half of local web searches are performed on a mobile device," Nasto said. "We develop apps and provide text alert programs for free. We include sponsorship and then share the revenue with each community for senior, youth, and health and wellness programs."

Mousetrap recently rolled out a mobile app for Oakland County Parks that gives users information on the county's recreation programs, golf courses, waterparks, events and more.
