Emagine For Youth Charity Event Sweeps Gloom from Rainy Day

Emagine Theatre hosted two preview events Sunday, benefiting the Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education and the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Oakland County.

Between the lousy weather and the intrigue of having a mainstream theater in Royal Oak, Emagine Theatre had no trouble getting hundreds of children to show up Sunday for its family-friendly preview event, .

The day attracted a slew of cheerful children and their families for a sneak preview of the complex, which combines a theater and Star Lanes bowling center. For the first event from 1-4 p.m., tickets included a movie, popcorn, pop and a tour for $20 at the door or $15 in advance. The second event, from 5-8 p.m., added pizza, live music by the Jazz Band and hors d’oeuvres for $40 at the door or $35 in advance.

All proceeds from the Sunday preview events are being evenly split between the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Oakland County and the .

“We started at 1 p.m. and had a long line by 1:15 p.m.,” Shewchuck said. “We didn’t have any specific expectations, and I think we have got a great crowd.”

One of the more popular movies previewed by many families was Rio. In addition to the movies, many people bowled, and face painting and airbrush tattoos were available for children.

“The whole place is 'wow,' ” said Cheryl Fossano of Royal Oak. “It’s a very nice and exciting place, and we’re so happy to have it.”

Fossano brought her two daughters and said they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. Royal Oak resident Beth Baker brought her two sets of twins along with her. They all enjoyed a little bit of everything, she said.

“It’s cool to come to this event and get to see everyone,” Baker said. “They love movies, so we’ll definitely be back. Now we don’t have to go to Birmingham anymore to see a movie.”

Owen said the Boys and Girls Club was delighted that Emagine had approached it and couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity. She noted that all the feedback she had received at the event was extremely positive. Shewchuck agreed.

“This is fabulous for the community,” Owen said. “People are flabbergasted; it’s just so stellar and stunning."
