Detroit Institute of Arts Announces Communities for Summer Inside-Out Program

Artworks will be installed in Royal Oak and 12 other cities in July.

A total of six works of art will be on display this summer, throughout downtown Royal Oak, as part of Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Inside|Out.

The program brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets and parks of metro Detroit. Royal Oak residents may remember a piece installed at in 2010, which was part of the same initiative.

In April, Royal Oak's Commission for the Arts approved the city's participation in the program.

"It is wonderful to have the opportunity to partner with the DIA. Lending our walls as the background for fabulous artwork from their collection is priceless," said Jason Gittinger a member of the Commission for the Arts. "With tough economic conditions challenging the foundations of our cultural institutions, it is heartening to see the entire region banding together to get the word out about the DIA."

Other cities participating in the program include Canton, Troy, Dearborn, Waterford, Garden City, Trenton, Ferndale, Clawson, Clinton Township, Harrison Township, Northville and Detroit.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is sponsoring the program for 2012 and 2013.

The DIA also offers free museum admission to a Family Sunday for residents of participating communities, so they can experience “their” works of art in person. Royal Oak's free day will be Aug. 26.
