High School Girls Receive Free Prom Makeovers in Royal Oak

Students from Covenant House Academies in Detroit spent Friday morning being pampered in Royal Oak.

On Friday, nearly a dozen students from Covenant House Academies in Detroit headed to Royal Oak for prom makeovers courtesy of L'Esprit Academy in downtown Royal Oak.

"Prom is tonight and the girls will all be on the Detroit Princess Riverboat looking like princesses," said Mary Jo Hartman of Covenant House.

"We donated all the services. We've done nails. We've done waxing. They are getting beautiful makeup — you name it," said Stacy Wells, owner of L'Esprit Academy. All the girls received gift bags, too.

Covenant House is an alternative high school for students between the ages of 16 and 22. There are three campuses in Detroit.

"Some students come because they are behind in school and they are trying to catch up. For others, public school just didn't work and this is better. They get more individual attention,” Hartman said.

Girls who thought graduation wasn't a possibility are graduating and headed to prom.

"I am very grateful that (L'Esprit Academy) has been able to make room for us and to give," said Mary Grace Viramontez, a social worker. "I am very proud of this community and these folks."
