Hot Dog! Get Your Redhots on Fifth Avenue in Royal Oak

A new eatery opens in downtown Royal Oak.

Detroit Dogs is open for business at 200 W. Fifth Ave.

What is Detroit Dogs? It's a new eatery featuring gourmet hot dogs.

"We're very excited to come to Royal Oak," Nino Perna of Monroe told Patch in December.

Together, Perna and partner Tony Sacco, also of Monroe, have more than 70 years of combined restaurant experience. The pair partnered with two Royal Oakers  — Nick Sacco and Joel Karboske — to open the red-hot eatery.

The concept of Detroit Dogs is that everything is local. The shop uses Dearborn Brand hot dogs and a bakery in Hamtramck makes the buns. Diners can also purchase Faygo Pop and Better Made potato chips.

"Our menu is small, but it's cool," said Perna.

Guests have 11 hot dog options, including Detroit, New York, Virginia, Chicago and Russian styles. There is also a Veggie Dog, served with cheddar cheese, kraut and onion, on the menu. Prices range from $2.50 to $3.50.

Detroit Dog is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, it's open until 3 a.m.
