Ice Cream Shop Proprietor has Wickedly Sweet News for Ferndale

If you know the magic word, Treat Dreams owner Scott Moloney will give away 40 doughnuts a day until he opens on Saturday to get his new Wicked Donuts business started.

Here’s some news that’s as wicked as it is sweet:

Scott Moloney is expanding his Treat Dreams ice cream shop this weekend’s planned opening of Wicked Donuts at his café at 22965 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Beginning Saturday, Moloney plans to offer about a dozen different kinds of gourmet doughnuts daily. Some are inspired by his exotic ice cream flavors – think Honey Lavender, Rosemary Olive Oil, Coconut Chai-Tea, Macaroni and Cheese, Sunday Breakfast (bacon included) and you’ll get the idea – that have made Treat Dreams distinctive. He’ll also serve coffee and espresso from Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co.

Moloney said that although a gourmet doughnut craze is sweeping the country, that’s not what inspired his expansion. Rather, he just likes doughnuts and has been planning to add them since he opened Treat Dreams three years ago.

The doughnuts will be pure Michigan. Maloney will decorate and fill them himself, but they will be baked at the nearby Apple Fritter Donut Shop. He also plans to use  jams and jellies produced by Slow Jams in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Supporting other local business is “our business model,” he told the newspaper.

Doughnuts, not ice cream, are Moloney’s real passion.

“I really never had a passion for ice cream,” he told the Free Press “I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t one of those give-me-three-scoops things. But doughnuts? I could never stop at one. It’s one of those things where I would have two or three if I found good ones.”

Treat Dreams hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Wicked Donuts will open at 7 a.m. to accommodate the breakfast crowd – though with frostings, fillings and sweet garnishments, they may taste more like dessert.

And about those free doughnuts being offered in preparation for Saturday’s opening: To find the secret word, find Treat Dreams on Facebook. One doughnut will be offered per person while supplies.
