Oktoberfest is Good Excuse to Check Out Brew Pub Renovations (and Drink Beer)

Check out the new decor at Bastone Brewery and say "Prost!" to German specials and cold beer.

Oktobefest, an autumn celebration that features dancing, eating, merrymaking and lots of beer-drinking, is happening through Oct. 13 at the newly renovated Bastone Brewery in downtown Royal Oak.

Over the summer, the Bastone empire at the corner of Main and Fifth streets, which also includes Craft, Vinotecca and Monk Beer Abbey, expanded its operation to 626 seats by adding new outdoor patio seating, a lounge area and a private dining area that can seat up to 22 people.

In addition to accommodating more guests, the design changes also let in more natural light and offer additional options to people looking for a place to host a party or special event, according to David Ritchie, managing partner.

New secure seating areas in Craft are perfect for bachelorette parties, while a second-floor private dining room in Bastone features a smart TV for business gatherings. There's also a new stage in Craft to kick back and enjoy live music on Thursdays.

"We really have something for every age group," Ritchie said.

Prost! See the renovations during Oktoberfest

Fans of German traditions and Munich-style beer can raise a glass to the new additions during Oktoberfest. (Prost means cheers in German, if you were wondering.) For $8, you can get a special limited edition beer glass filled with Rocktoberfest Lager or another fresh craft beer.

The menu at the Belgian-style brew pub always has lots of French and German influence but the Oktoberfest menu leans toward German tastes, said Ritchie. He recommends trying the sauerbraten - a beef dish served with gingersnap sauce, German potato salad and braised red cabbage.

"It's really good," Ritchie said. "Very German tasting."

Other options include pepper encrusted pork tenderloin, vegetable pancakes and braised lamb shank.

Bastone, which will celebrate its tenth year in Royal Oak in April 2014, changes the Oktoberfest menu every year.

"Our chef, Robert Young, doesn't like to sit around," Ritchie said. "He likes to change the recipes and have fun with it. He's from Wales so our European food is very authentic."
