Pig Out: Baconfest Goes to Market on June 2

Nearly 40 food vendors now in place to welcome the cult of bacon at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Thirty restaurants, four dessert shops and two food trucks will bring home the bacon on June 2 for the first event at the .

“All the restaurants are creating something fun and unique,” said Matthew Peach, the mastermind behind the pork extravaganza. “They are all trying to out do each other.”

Pork lovers will join the chefs to celebrate all things bacon related—from smoked bacon to Canadian bacon to turkey bacon—there will be plenty of samples. In addition there will be bacon-themed desserts and other types of foods wrapped in bacon, because as Peach will tell you, everything tastes better with bacon.

Royal Oak restaurants go hog wild

Seven Royal Oak establishments are participating: , , , , , the Green Zebra food truck and Cheeky Monkeys Foods, which will serve organic scones, shortbread and cookies—all, of course, with bacon.

“Lockhart’s is serving candied bacon dipped in Dr. Pepper and chocolate ganache. Holy cow! It was amazing! It’s a very unique dish and we’ll have a lot of those,” said Peach, who has been lucky enough to sample many of the foods that will be served. “Baconfest is very cool from a culinary standpoint.”

Ann Arbor’s Seva restaurant will be offering vegan bacon, but with other restaurants serving bacon-wrapped pork belly – which is essentially bacon wrapped bacon – one can imagine this event is not for vegetarians or people who don’t eat pork.

“We’re the first bacon event in the country that we know of to offer vegan bacon, which is neat, but I don’t want people to get the idea there are a lot of vegetarian options,” Peach said.

In addition to all the bacon, there will live entertainment.

The $75 VIP tickets have sold out, according to Peach, and more than half of the general admission tickets are gone. To guarantee your spot it’s best to order your tickets in advance. For more information, visit baconfestmichigan.com.
