Speak Out: Will You Boycott Denny's, Applebees and Papa John's?

The franchise owners of these popular chains are making big changes to offset costs of Obamacare, but it's causing some customers to rethink which businesses they'll support.

Several franchise owners of popular restaurant chains say that the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare will increase cost for small business owners—and in order to offset costs they are adding surcharges to bills, threatening layoffs and more.

According to the Huffington Post, John Metz, a Florida-based Denny's franchise owner, is adding a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset costs for healthcare.

Apple-Metro CEO Zane Tankel, who owns more than 40 Applebee's chains in the metro New York, slammed Obamacare on Fox Business Network, Huffington Post reported, stating he would not hire any more employees and may cut the hours of current employees.

But a Twitter campaign has already begun against Papa John's after CEO John Schnatter’s said the chain would increase prices to offset costs related to the  Affordable Care Act. Protestors are asking Americans to support local pizza chains over Papa John's.

So what do you think? Will you boycott these businesses for their actions against employees and customers? Or you think that small business owners are suffering due to Obamacare? Tell us in the comments.

Nope, if people voted for o then they get what they voted for, nat'l healthcare - just go to Italy, France or anynother country there and talk to people to see what it's like and how much taxes they pay, we'll be in deep.... Soon, just like those countires - pls keep in mind, 'Europe' is over 350 mil people and Brussels does not handle Europe's healthcare - each individual country of approx 55mil do, and they cant get it working - then you have this country with 350 mil people in 50 states.....will be soooooo expensive and bureaucratic,

Metz is trying to make a political statement by using his employees. Unless Denny's dienounces his actions, I will not patronize any Denny's. This has nothing to do with actual costs of Obamacares. He plans on adding a surcharge AND cutting back employee hours??? That statement alone proves this is nothing more than Metz whining because President Obama was reelected. He wants to cut corners, thereby increasing his profit margin, all based on a farce. Not buying it - not patronizing Denny's or Papa Johns.

I have heard of several small and mid size businesses doing the same thing. And none of them were ones mentioned in the above article.

Small Business is forced to make changes because of the new socialist regime. This is just the tip of the iceberg. In this country it has become easier and more fashionable to let the Gov take care of your every need. I'm waiting for "Gas Stamps" then I'm going to quit my job and let the government pay for my housing, phone, food and gas until they run out of money. It's easier that way. Pride in self and country is out of style. Join the Obamamasses!!! Down with freedom!

These greedy 22 car garage living in mansion guys are unamerican and sore losers. I will not shop at their resturants ever again. Maybe they could downsize to 20 car garage and give their hard working employees basic health care. Corporate greed is trying to destroy this country, which in my opion is a form of Treason.

But how much is insurance costing you in the USA? Probably more than the extra taxes people are paying in Europe. Most of my relatives live in Europe and they gladly pay the extra taxes for the extra benefits. Don't fall for the right-winged "Tea" in the USA because it's poison!
Mike Stewart November 16, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Respectfully, Bonnie, If you're not medically insured I hope you won't need emergency medical treatment ... because if you do, who will pay for it if you can't? And if you are fortunate enough to afford the high cost of medical treatment then good ... but what about those who don't?

Right on!!

Mr. Harris seems to believe that the real world endless billions of additional costs heaped on businesses by the Health Care changes will magically not create major issues for businesses or be passed on. Economic courses are offered at local universities that can help actually you with understanding basic economics.

Bottom line is that "if these companies would have been taking care of their employees in the first place, the government wouldn't have had to intervene." And for those who are anti-Obama care ... I hope that someday you'll never have to file bankruptcy because of being medically uninsured. JUST MAYBE OBAMACARE WILL SAVE YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING -- AND MAYBE EVEN YOUR LIFE.

I've never seen such a bunch of sore losers since Obama's win. And of course, seeing Karl Rove's virtual meltdown on FAUX News Election night was absolutely priceless. Even Romeny is blaming his loss on "gifts" that Obama promised his constituency. What a joke. We're lucky that this charlatan lost! If you're going to use Romney's argument, then he is guilty of promising tax cuts to the wealthy and the rolling back of regulations on businesses. Remember, when Bush took office, he inherited a surplus, a strong economy and a nation at peace. What did he leave Obama? 2 wars, trillion dollar deficits, and an economic meltdown--the likes of which we haven't seen since the 1930s. Since Obama took office he has: stabilized the economy, saved the auto industry, regulated Wall Street, ended one war and is ending another, gave women equal pay as men, instituted healthcare, and is in the process of having the rich pay their fair share of taxes and working on entitlements. Obama is doing a great job!

Obamacare is just a phony excuse for reducing their workforce and hours. Their real reason for cutting costs is the reduction in customers caused by the economic state of the middle class. These restaurant chains depend entirely on the middle class for customers. When the rich get richer, everyone else gets poorer and every business that depends on customers will suffer. Economic recovery can only start at the middle and then trickle up and down. Every businessman knows that customers create jobs. There is no shortage of capital for business expansion, just a shortage of customers.

Denny's CEO released a statement denouncing the franchisee that was being irresponsible. You can read his statement on their website. Denny's should not be part of this boycott.
