Woodward Furniture Business Owner Retiring, Closing Up Shop After 33 Years

The owner of Naked Furniture in Royal Oak plans to spend winters in Florida.

Victor Begg is looking forward to spending time in his Florida condominium.

"I wish I was there today," said Begg, 66, of Bloomfield Hills on a chilly December day. But, the owner of Naked Furniture has some unfinished business to attend to.

After 33 years in the retail furniture business, Begg is retiring and closing up shop at 28096 Woodward Ave. Everything in the store must go.

"I was walking around this morning and looking at what we have left and there are still some pretty good deals," he said.

Begg began the process of selling his inventory in September.

"We have to be out of the building at the end of the month," he said.

The University of Detroit grad hoped to pass on the family business to one of his three children but they enjoy what they are doing and have their own passions, he said.

"It's a different generation. Two of my kids won't come within one mile of this store," Begg said. "For me to do it all and be here seven days a week, well, it's hard work."

While he's looking forward to spending time in the Florida sunshine, he'll miss his customers.

"I have served four generations," he said. "Grandmother, mother, daughter, grandchild — they all have a piece of furniture from me."

A Muslim community activist who served on the Michigan Community Service Commission for eight years, Begg says he plans to return to the Royal Oak-area for community service projects.

"This is where we have roots," he said.

Naked Furniture is open Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
