Mental Attitude: His Personality is Key to a Long and Happy Marriage. A new study suggests that long-term unions tend to be happier if the husband has an agreeable personality and is also in good health. Interestingly, the agreeability and health of the wife does not seem to play a significant role in predicting marital harmony.  Journal of Marriage and Family, February 2014

Health Alert: Americans Struggling to Purchase Food and Medications. According to a new report, 18.8% of the chronically ill report food insecurity and 23.4% admit to taking less or none of their prescribed medication because of cost. Approximately 11% of this group reported both food insecurity and cost-related medication underuse. Lead investigator Dr. Seth Berkowitz writes, "Food insecurity is strongly associated with cost-related medication underuse, and approximately 1 in 3 chronically ill NHIS (National Health Interview Survey) participants are unable to afford food, medication, or both, despite participation in assistance programs. Interventions targeted to under-resourced groups who may face 'treat or eat' choices could produce substantial health gains for these vulnerable patients." American Journal of Medicine, March 2014

Diet: Recommendations for Eating Better at the Airport. The temptation to eat junk food while waiting to board a flight can be overwhelming. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends the following "healthier" options when you're stuck in an airport terminal: nuts, nutrition bars, a sandwich on whole-grain bread with lean meat, veggies topped with mustard, salad topped with a lean protein, a cup of vegetable soup (preferably easy on the salt), a package of cut vegetables, or a fruit cup. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, January 2014

Exercise: Physical Activity Helps Obese Children Become Metabolically Healthy. An analysis of 181 obese children shows that up to a third could be considered as healthy from a metabolic standpoint. This means they would not be at an imminent risk of developing insulin resistance (a precursor to diabetes), hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity-related diseases. Researchers took into account age, body composition, physical activity, and diet along with clinical indicators associated with obesity. They found that metabolically healthy obese children were more physically active, spent less time in front of electronic media, and consumed fewer overall calories than their metabolically unhealthy peers. Diabetes Care, March 2014

Chiropractic: Relief for Arthritic Knees. A randomized controlled trial involving patients who suffered from osteoarthritic knee pain showed a positive response among participants treated with manual therapies over a two-week treatment period. These patients reported a significant reduction in pain as well as an improvement in knee function.  Journal of Canadian Chiropractic Association, December 2008

Wellness/Prevention: Catheter-Related Urinary Tract Infections Higher in Larger Hospitals. Researchers at the Columbia School of Nursing have found that larger hospitals (hospitals with 500 beds or more) have a 1.5 times higher rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections than smaller hospitals. The finding was surprising to researchers due to the cause of the occurrences. They found that the increased rate correlated with a failure to follow recommended guidelines and not due to volume of patients. Columbia University Medical Center, October 2012
