Mental Attitude: Five Behaviors that Lower Dementia Risk. A 35-year-long study reveals five lifestyle behaviors can reduce the risk of cognitive decline: regular exercise, not smoking, low bodyweight, healthy diet, and low alcohol intake. Individuals who adhere to four or five of these behaviors have a 60% lower risk for dementia and other cognitive issues than those who do not. PLoS One, December 2013

Health Alert: Acid Reflux Linked to Vitamin B12 Deficiency. A recent report suggests that using antacids consistently for two years or longer is linked to vitamin B12 deficiency, which can adversely affect the nervous system. The study authors add, "These findings do not recommend against acid suppression for persons with clear indications for treatment, but clinicians should exercise appropriate vigilance when prescribing these medications and use the lowest possible effective dose."   JAMA, December 2013

Diet: Burger Consumption in Restaurants Increases Obesity Risk in African-American Women. Researchers have found that African-American women who eat burgers from restaurants a minimum of two times per week have a 26% increased risk of becoming obese compared to those who rarely eat burgers. Additionally, African-American women who drink at least two sugary soft drinks per day are 10% more likely to become obese. The authors conclude that "the identification of individual foods or beverages that are associated with weight gain provides a basis for specific and straightforward recommendations to help prevent obesity." Boston University Medical Center, December 2013

Exercise: Helps Keep Muscles Healthy! A Japanese study finds that exercising during middle age helps prevent sarcopenia, a disease associated with the loss of skeletal muscle mass during the aging process that affects around 12% of the elderly population. International Osteoporosis Foundation, December 2013

Chiropractic: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Symptoms Decreased. In this case study, a 78-year-old male with low back pain and bilateral severe leg pain was treated with chiropractic care. MRI findings revealed that the patient suffered from severe degenerative lumbar stenosis in the lower lumbar segments. Flexion-distraction manipulation was performed and the patient saw a decrease in frequency and intensity of his leg pain, as well as resolution of his low back pain. These improvements were still present during a follow-up visit five months later. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, May 2001

Wellness/Prevention: Breast Cancer Screening More Consistent than Previously Understood. A re-examination of data from past studies on mammography screening shows that the benefits of screening are greater than previously thought and have led to a substantial reduction in breast cancer mortality. Robert A. Smith, Ph.D., senior director of cancer screening at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta adds, "We hope these findings reassure clinicians and the public that that there is little question about the effectiveness of mammography screening, which should continue to play a very important role in our efforts to prevent deaths from breast cancer." Breast Cancer Management, November 2013
