“For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use to be anything else.” ~ Winston Churchill

Mental Attitude: Email Stress! At the annual conference for the British Psychological Society, occupational psychologist Dr. Emma Russell identified several email behaviors that appear to cause stress and negatively affect the well-being of employees. These practices include ping-pong (emails instantly responded to in a back and forth manner), reading and replying to emails outside of work hours, responding to emails when others are present, checking emails but not replying to them, requesting read receipts, and checking emails when your computer or electronic device alerts you that a new email has arrived. Kingston University, January 2014

Health Alert: Shingles Linked to Stroke Risk. A study involving data on over 300,000 patients has confirmed an association between shingles and an increased risk for stroke or other blood clot events. Researchers found that individuals under 40 years of age who had shingles have a 74% increased risk for a stroke compared with those who have not had shingles. Study author Dr. Judith Breuer adds, "Anyone with shingles, and especially younger people, should be screened for stroke risk factors."  Neurology, January 2014

Diet: Most Clinical Studies on Vitamins and Supplements are Flawed. A new analysis of previous studies reveals that the majority of clinical trials of vitamins/supplements - including those that conclude they have no value or are harmful - have flawed methodology, rendering them useless. Often, researchers try to study nutrients the same way they would study prescription drugs. This leads to conclusions with little meaning and less accuracy that often defy other evidence. New methodologies are needed to provide valid information to people around the world who have poor diets and fail to meet the recommended intake for many vitamins and minerals. Nutrients, December 2013

Exercise: Are You Fit for the Slopes? Each year in the United States, 144,000 skiing injuries occur with the most common being knee injuries. To reduce your risk for injuries when downhill skiing or snowboarding, experts recommend preparing your body before you hit the slopes. It's important for skiers to be in shape, as they tend to fall more when they are fatigued. Cardiovascular conditioning, leg strengthening, and agility exercises are ways to improve your endurance for winter sports.  Houston Methodist Hospital, January 2014

Chiropractic: Relief for Spinal Stenosis. In a case-study, a 78-year-old man with severe bilateral leg pain and positive MRI findings for severe degenerative lumbar stenosis received a trial of flexion-distraction manipulation. The patient experienced a decrease in the frequency and intensity of his symptoms during the course of treatment and maintained improvement at a five month follow-up visit. The authors conclude that this type of manipulation shows promise for individuals with spinal stenosis. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, May 2001

Wellness/Prevention: Tripling Tobacco Taxes Could Decrease Millions of Deaths. A recent report suggests that tripling taxes on tobacco globally would prevent 200 million tobacco-related deaths by 2025. Study author Dr. Prabhat Jha writes, "Death and taxes are inevitable, but they don't need to be in that order. A higher tax on tobacco is the single most effective intervention to lower smoking rates and to deter future smokers." New England Journal of Medicine, January 2014
