“It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.” ~ Terry Pratchett

Mental Attitude: Worriers are More Analytical. Our brains use two methods for decision making. One is systematic processing, which involves assessing all available information before making a conclusion. The other is heuristic processing which involves a quick intuitive response. Researchers note that worrying activates the left frontal lobe, the area of the brain used for systematic processing. This means worriers use the analytical part of the brain more heavily when making decisions. Clinical Psychology Review, August 2013

Health Alert: No Need to Restrict Food and Drink During Childbirth. After analyzing mothers and newborns who had/ did not have food and drink restrictions during labor, researchers found no differences in any outcomes. Therefore, the researchers say women should have a choice in whether or not they eat and drink during labor. The Cochrane Library, August 2013

Diet: Another Reason to Lose Weight and Stop Smoking! The negative effects of obesity and smoking are common knowledge. New information suggests that the two together can also affect the body's ability to metabolize up to 75% of all over-the-counter and prescription medications. As a result, blood levels for many medications may be too low to achieve the desired outcome. American Chemical Society, September 2013

Exercise: Moderate Exercise and Knee Arthritis. A new study of 1,500 participants over the age of 45 revealed that the risk of middle-aged and older adults for developing arthritis in the knee is unaffected by 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. The study's authors added, "This study shows that engaging in physical activity at these levels is not going to put you at a greater risk of knee osteoarthritis. Furthermore, we found this held true no matter what a person's race, sex, or body weight is. There was absolutely no association between these factors and a person's risk." Arthritis Care & Research, August 2013

Chiropractic: Optimize Pain Relief During Pregnancy with Chiropractic. As pregnant women move into their second and third trimesters, their centers of gravity shift forward. This can cause an increase in lumbar stress, possibly leading to low back and pelvic pain. Increasing evidence attests to the effectiveness and safety of treating this pain using manual therapy. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a very effective and safe option for pregnant women suffering from low back and pelvic pain. Canadian Family Physician, August 2013

Wellness/Prevention: Hybrid Screening Recommended Colorectal Cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is one of the top three leading causes of cancer deaths among men and women in the United States. A new study suggests that combining a fecal immunological test and a colonoscopy could result in a substantial reduction in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality compared to current recommended strategies.American Gastroenterological Association, April 2013
