“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” ~ Aristotle

Mental Attitude: College-Aged Drug Users Have Impaired Brain Activity. New research has uncovered impaired neural activity in the brains of college-aged students who occasionally use stimulant drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, and certain prescription medications. The researchers found that intermittent stimulant users demonstrated consistent patterns of reduced activity in brain regions that help one anticipate a situation or detect trends. Journal of Neuroscience, March 2014

Health Alert: Does Daylight Saving Time Cause Heart Attacks? An analysis of hospital data in Michigan from 2010 to 2013 reveals a 25% increase in heart attacks on the Monday immediately after Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins. Researchers also noted a 21% decrease of heart attacks on the Tuesday after clocks are turned back in the fall. Though the study found an association between DST and increased heart attack reports, it does not prove a cause and effect. Heart attacks usually are more common on Monday mornings, but it is not clear why DST increases the number of heart attack events. The lead author theorizes that a combination of factors such as the stress of a new work week and changes in the sleep cycle may be responsible for the increase. Open Heart, March 2014

Diet: Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk of Diabetes. According to new research, the Mediterranean diet is linked to a lower risk of diabetes, especially among people at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Using data on over 160,000 patients, researchers noted that those who followed a Mediterranean diet had a 21% reduced risk for developing diabetes compared with participants in a control group. Among individuals already at high risk for cardiovascular disease, the difference was even more pronounced as those who adopted a Mediterranean diet reduced their risk for developing diabetes by 27% compared with a control group. American College of Cardiology's 63rd Annual Scientific Session, March 2014

Exercise: Fitness Improves Health as We Age. Middle-aged individuals who exercise regularly and are physically fit have a reduced risk of developing chronic health conditions in old age. Even a moderate increase in fitness can reduce the risks of many chronic health conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, colon or lung cancers, chronic kidney disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), stroke, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, and congestive heart failure. Archives of Internal Medicine, August 2012

Chiropractic: Adjustments Provide Protection for Spine. Researchers have found that older patients receiving chiropractic care for low back pain are significantly less likely to experience declines in their average daily lifestyle and low back function compared with older low back patients receiving only medical care.  Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutic, March 2014

Wellness/Prevention: Is Stress Driving Your Allergies? A recent study reveals that 39% of a group of 179 study participants experienced an allergy flare up more than once over a 12-week period. The researchers found that those who had allergy flare ups had higher levels of stress than those who did not have allergy symptoms. The study suggests that allergy sufferers should try and alleviate stress when possible. They recommend techniques such as meditation and deep breathing, learning healthy coping mechanisms, making time for fun and relaxation, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and asking for help from family or friends when needed. Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, April 2014
