Mental Attitude: Smartphone App May Help Reduce Anxiety. “Gamifying” a scientifically supported intervention can offer mental health and behavioral benefits for people with high levels of anxiety. This emerging treatment is called attention-bias modification training (ABMT) and it involves training patients to ignore threatening stimuli. The study found that playing a mobile gaming app that uses ABMT for as little as 25 minutes reduced stress in individuals with anxiety. Lead researcher Dr. Tracy Dennis writes, "Our hope is to develop highly accessible and engaging evidence-based mobile intervention strategies that can be used in conjunction with traditional therapy or that can be 'self-curated' by the individual as personal tools to promote mental wellness." Clinical Psychological Science, March 2014

Health Alert: Cardiac Arrest During Childbirth More Frequent Than Thought. A new study suggests that cardiac arrest during childbirth is twice as common as previously believed. Though still rare, data from 56 million births in the United States shows that one in 12,000 women experience cardiac arrest while giving birth. The survival rate in 2011 for such events was about 60%. Study author Dr. Jill Mhyre adds, "These are rare high-stakes events on obstetric units, and team preparation is critical to ensure that everyone is ready to act quickly and effectively... Fortunately, physician anesthesiologists are experts in leading resuscitation teams for maternal cardiac arrest and other emergencies that happen on the labor floor." Anesthesiology, March 2014

Diet: What is Soluble and Insoluble Fiber? Fiber is classified as either soluble or insoluble, but what does that mean? Soluble fiber partially dissolves in water and is associated with lowering bad cholesterol, regulating blood sugar, and lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Insoluble fiber resists digestion and does not dissolve in water. It helps keep you regular, prevents constipation, and reduces the risk of diverticulitis. Consumption of both types of fiber can lower the risk of coronary disease, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. WebMD, October 2010

Exercise: Exercise Protects Against Visual Impairment. People who exercise three or more times a week are 58% less likely to develop visual impairment. Ophthalmology, March 2014

Chiropractic: More Valuable and Cost-Efficient for Work-Related Low Back Injuries. A recent study concludes that chiropractic care is a more effective treatment for common work-related low back pain than treatment provided by either a physician or physical therapist. The study revealed fewer disability recurrences, shorter initial disability, and lower total cost of care when work-related low back injuries were treated by a chiropractor. Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, April 2011

Wellness/Prevention: Do You Know the Warning Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning? Carbon monoxide gas is colorless, odorless, and produced by several heat-making devices. When this gas is improperly vented, individuals can be exposed to fatal levels. Common warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, and flu symptoms without fever. If you notice these symptoms without any apparent cause, evacuate the premises quickly and seek immediate care. Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for all homes and all fuel-burning appliances should be professionally inspected for safety. US Consumer Product Safety Commission, February 2014
