5 Things to Know This Week: MLK Day, Detroit Tigers, Vodka Vodka and More

There's a lot going on in Royal Oak this week. What do you have planned?

It's a busy week in Royal Oak, as usual. Here are five things you should know as you go about your week:

  1. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday: Jan. 21 is a federal holiday marking the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In observance of the holiday, there will be no regular mail delivery. The 44th District Court offices and Oakland Community College will also be closed Monday.
  2. Open Mic Night at the Comedy Castle on Wednesday: OK, you get a few laughs at the office or with your friends. Now it's time for a real challenge. Every Wednesday Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle has open mic nights. If you're ready to share your material with a live audience, this is the place to take it to the next level. Call 248-542-9900 to reserve a spot.
  3. Anti-bullying event with Detroit Tigers on Thursday: The first ever Strike Out Bullying event will be held at Royal Oak Middle School. The Detroit Tigers, the United States Attorney’s Office, and the Royal Oak Schools are teaming up to bring this special event to Royal Oak. This is a free, but tickets will be required as seating is limited. Tickets are now available at the Board of Education Office, 1123 Lexington Blvd., Royal Oak. 
  4. 'Curtains' at the Baldwin Thursday through Saturday:From the award-winning team of Kander & Ebb, get ready for some musical sleuthing fun! Detective Lt. Frank Cioffi begins investigating the murder of the leading lady in a Broadway-bound show and soon finds himself happily caught up in love, and in a musical headed for New York. Full of thrills and spills, laughter, mayhem and mystery, this hilarious ‘whodunnit’ celebrates the Golden Age of musicals and the Hollywood 'film noir' detective movies of the 1950's.   5. Metro Times Vodka Vodka event on Saturday: Refuse, Resist, Drink! Vodka Vodka returns for its 4th year as Detroit’s premier Vodka-tasting party. Guests will enjoy a vast assortment of vodkas and vodka-infused cuisine to sample, plus DJ entertainment. Tickets are $45 advance or $50 at the door (if available). Admission includes 10 drink tickets and unlimited food samples. A portion of proceeds to benefit Camp Casey. Adults 21 and over are welcome.
