5 Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Here's how to get educated and pay your respects to the civil rights leader.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Here are five ways to recognize the day.

1.

  • When: 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., Monday
  • Why go: The Detroit Zoological Society is offering a discount of $2 off all regular-price admissions to the Detroit Zoo in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The discount is available only with a coupon, which can be printed off the Zoo’s website (visit www.detroitzoo.org and click on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day banner on the home page).

  • Where: , Oakland Center Banquet Rooms
  • When: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday
  • Why go: The 20th annual Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards Celebration will recognize exceptional Oakland University students who carry on Rev. King's vision and promote interracial acceptance and understanding in our community. The keynote speaker will be Common, the rapper, author and activist.

3. 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast

  • Where: The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 East Warren Avenue, Detroit
  • When: 7-10 a.m. Monday
  • Cost: $35
  • Tickets: www.brownpapertickets.com
  • Why go:  The Keynote speaker for the discussion will be the Rev. Dr. Georgia Hill from the Plymouth United Church of Christ. The morning will include a special tribute to Congressman John Conyers and performances by Armond and the Institute of Music & Dance at Marygrove College.  The honorary chairman for the event will be the Honorable Damon J. Keith. The doors open at 7 a.m. and breakfast is from 8-9 a.m.

4. Detroit Institute of Arts

  • Where: The Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit
  • When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
  • Cost: Adults are $8, seniors are $6, kids 6-17 are $4, college students are $5, children 5 and under are free.
  • Why go: This is the first time the museum is open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are several activities on Monday that are free with the price of admission. To check the schedule for the day, click here.

5. Royal Oak Public Library

When: 10 a.m - 9 p.m. Monday

Why go: Want more information on the civil rights icon? Check out the library for information about Martin Luther King Jr. There are autobiographies, memoirs and audiobooks available for children and adults.
