Beaumont Seeking Volunteers with Type 2 Diabetes for Study

Researchers at Beaumont Health System are seeking volunteers who have type 2 diabetes and are currently taking the drug metformin. The research study will evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication called dulaglutide.

“The study is being done to see how safe the drug dulaglutide is and how well it will work to help people with type 2 diabetes,” says Wendy Miller, M.D., director, Nutrition and Preventive Medicine Research, Beaumont Research Institute and the site’s principal investigator. “We’re interested in how dulaglutide compares to liraglutide, a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration, in patients with diabetes who are also taking metformin.”

Nearly 600 patients will be recruited nationwide for this multisite study.

According to the National Institutes of Health, type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of all Americans diagnosed with this metabolic disorder.

To be eligible for the study, individuals must:
•       Be 18 years or older
•       Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
•       Have had a stable body weight over the past three months
•       Be currently taking at least 1,500 mg of metformin and have elevated blood sugar levels

The study will last up to 6 ½ months with a one-month follow-up visit. Participants must attend all 11 study visits. Study participants will receive all study-related procedures, tests and medications at no charge. They will be compensated for time and travel for each completed visit. The research will be conducted at the Beaumont Health Center, 4949 Coolidge Highway in Royal Oak.
