UPDATE: Royal Oak Schools Closed, City Declares Snow Emergency

City digs out from under 9-10 inches of snow that has fallen since Sunday afternoon.

The Sunday-Monday snowstorm is already being declared the biggest of the season, with nearly 9 inches of the white stuff dumping on Royal Oak and surrounding areas, the National Weather Service reported.

Royal Oak public school students, due back Monday after a long weekend mid-winter break, got the news early this morning that they could enjoy one more day off. Other closings include St. Paul Lutheran School and Oakland Community College. Shrine Catholic schools were already closed this week for their mid-winter break.

Sunday night, Royal Oak declared a snow emergency, meaning vehicles are to remain off city streets until plow trucks have gone through the area. "Once a snow emergency is called and plowing begins, it takes approximately 24-36 hours to plow all city streets, depending on how much snow has fallen," according to the city.
