Clawson to Host Special Food Allergy Friendly Trick-or-Treat Event Saturday

Kids in costume are invited to 'Trick-or-Treasure' downtown Oct. 27.

When your kids have food allergies, trick-or-treating can be a tough road to conquer.

This Halloween, Clawson is determined to change that, and ensure that all kids can enjoy candy-munching on the spooky holiday.

The city's Downtown Development Authority will host 'Trick-or-Treasure' this Saturday, and all local youth are invited.

From noon until 3 p.m., children (ages 3-12), with or without food allergies, can meet up in downtown Clawson, at the intersection of 14 Mile and Main Street, for some good fashioned, free Halloween fun.

Costumes are recommended, as local businesses will be passing out sweets during one of the country's only food allergy friendly events this year.

Roughly 9,500 hospitalizations and dozens of deaths occur in children every year because of severe allergic reactions to food, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The DDA event committee event is purchasing all of the candy that will be distributed at 'Trick-or-Treasure' and screening it to avoid ingredients as well as manufacturing contamination issues that could trigger allergic reactions. The committee is working alongside pediatric allergy specialist Dr. Devang Doshi from Beaumont Health System and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network to ensure the safety of the event.

Treats to be passed out include Skittles, Starburst, Smarties, Charms Blow Pops and Tootsie Rolls. Warp 9 Comics will also be handing out free Halloween-themed comic books to children who stop by the store.
