Farmers Market Find: Fresh Pasta Sauce, Singing Fireflies, Arts, Beats & Eats Updates

There's more than just peppers and pasta available at the market. Stop by to listen as local musicians share their sweet sounds.

You know about the fresh produce and flowers, but there’s so much more. Every week we share what’s new, interesting and in season at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Bon-A-Rose offers fresh pasta sauce

For more than four generations Bon-A-Rose has been creating pasta sauces and canned items with Old World Sicilian flair. Now, every Friday and Saturday you’ll find Darrell Hoffman, co-owner of Bon-A-Rose, at the Royal Oak Farmers Market encouraging guests to sample one of his tasty sauces or salad dressings.

Bon-A-Rose has been a regular vendor at the market for three years.  “We love the Royal Oak market. Many of our special ingredients are purchased right here from the local farmers,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman and his team prepare something five days a week. Freshness is a key to their success, he said. “We use only the freshest ingredients in every batch,” he said.

Carol Rommelare of Plymouth drives to Royal Oak especially for the Bon-A-Rose products. She said they offer the best beets and applesauces she’s ever had. “It’s worth the drive,” she said.

Music at the market

It’s not just fruits and vegetables at the market. Every Saturday on the north side of the building market-goers can take a break with some tunes from local musicians and entertainers.

"We have guests that come simply to enjoy breakfast with a little live music," said Gwen Ross, market master at the Royal Oak market.

This week check out the funky tunes played by the Fireflies quartet. The Fireflies include Maurice Greenia Jr. on the kazoo, James Knoll on the washboard, Nancy Greenia on the mandolin and Matthew Greenia playing acoustic guitar.

Market updates for Arts, Beats & Eats

The Royal Oak Post Office will be setting up a temporary location at the market during Arts, Beats & Eats. Postal purchases can be made at a retail kiosk on the west side market entrance.

“We want to ensure that post office customers and citizens experience as little inconvenience as possible during this event," said Greg Rassel, director of Recreation and Public Services for Royal Oak.

Market-goers can still enjoy free parking during regular market hours.  Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Arts, Beats & Eats parking rates of $15 go into effect.

The Royal Oak Farmers Market is open 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
