Farmers Market Find: Gluten-Free Treats, Corn Roast

Country fair is Saturday at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

There's so much more than fresh produce and flowers available at the market. Every week we share what’s new, interesting and in season at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Delicious treats can be healthy, too  

Looking for a healthy alternative to whole grains?  Lynn Fish of Happy Belly bakeries and Haute Chocolate has the solution—gluten free desserts, granola and chocolates—and they're available at the Royal Oak Farmers Market every Friday from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

"Most of my bakery products are a diabetic's dream," said Fish.

Favorites are the Paleo Diet friendly: Bliss Cake and Belly Bar, made

from ground fruit and nuts, eggs, and almonds. (The Paleo Diet follows the principles of eating like our hunter-gather ancestors.)

She uses only natural, fruit based sweeteners for her treats. One is palm sugar, the nectar extracted from palm dates. 

Jeanine Garland of Madison Heights comes to the farmers market specifically to buy chocolate, saying Haute Chocolates have an "absolutley insane" flavor. "It's the best chocolate I've ever had," said Garland.  She's been buying from Fish for several years and doesn't buy similar products from anyone else. 

12th Annual Corn Roast & Country Fair

The Royal Oak Farmers Market will host the 12th annual 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday.  This year more than 24 local artisan tents will be set up. Activities for kids include face painting, a moon walk, and games.

One favorite game is Dunk-a-Cop says Market Master Gwen Ross. The police support many charitable causes so all proceeds from the Dunk-a-Cop station will go to the .  

"Dunkers" will receive a sticker that reads, "I dunked a cop at the Royal Oak Farmers Market".

My Garden Produce will roast more than 2,100 ears of corn. This year's corn is sweeter than ever said David Mribe who works with his father, Isaiah Mribe, the owner of My Garden Produce.
